Happy Birthday, Kapil Dev,

Today, on January 6, 2026, cricket legend Kapil Dev turns 67. Known as the Haryana Hurricane, he revolutionized Indian cricket through his all-round prowess, iconic captaincy, and unbreakable records.

Early Life and Domestic Rise. Kapil Dev Nikhanj was born on January 6, 1959, in Chandigarh to a Punjabi Hindu family; his father Ram Lal was a teak merchant.

He honed his skills at D.A.V. College and debuted for Haryana in 1975, taking 6 wickets against Punjab and ending the season with 121 wickets in 30 matches. In subsequent seasons, he claimed multiple 8-wicket hauls, including 8/20 against Bengal, and led Haryana to the 1990-91 Ranji Trophy title with a semi-final 141 and 5 wickets, plus key contributions in the final against Bombay featuring Sachin Tendulkar . His county stint with Northamptonshire (1981-83) and Worcestershire (1984-85) yielded 2,312 runs with 4 centuries and 103 wickets in 40 matches, sharpening his skills abroad. These domestic feats, blending fiery pace bowling and aggressive batting, propelled him to the international stage. International Debut and Early Career

Kapil debuted in Tests against Pakistan in Faisalabad on October 16, 1978, stunning batsmen with pace and bouncers despite modest figures. He scored India's fastest Test fifty off 33 balls in Karachi and his maiden century (126) against West Indies in Delhi in 1979. Against Australia at home, he took 28 wickets, and versus Pakistan in 1979-80, he grabbed 32 wickets including a 7/56 at Chennai, becoming the youngest to 100 wickets and 1,000 runs in 25 Tests. In ODIs, his start was slow, but he adapted, scoring his first fifty against New Zealand in 1980-81. Tours to England (1982) saw him average 73 with the bat and win Man of the Series awards, establishing him as India's pace spearhead. By 1982, at 24, he was primed for leadership.

Captaincy Triumph: 1983 World Cup Glory. Appointed captain in 1982-83 after Sunil Gavaskar's rest, Kapil's first full series was a gritty ODI win over West Indies (72 runs, 2 wickets), boosting morale. As 66-1 underdogs in the 1983 World Cup, India beat West Indies first up, but slumped to 17/5 against Zimbabwe—Kapil's unbeaten 175* off 138 balls (16 fours, 6 sixes) rescued them, a record 10th-wicket stand with Syed Kirmani. In the semi-final, he took 3/41 to curb England; in the Lord's final defending 183, his spectacular backward catch off Viv Richards (running 20 yards) triggered West Indies' collapse to 140, securing India's maiden World Cup. Kapil tallied 303 runs (avg 60.60) and 12 wickets in 8 games, the youngest World Cup-winning captain ever. He also won Asia Cups in 1988 and 1991 as skipper. Overall Captaincy Record Kapil captained 34 Tests (4 wins, 7 losses, 1 tie, 22 draws) and 74 ODIs (39 wins, 33 losses). Strong vs Sri Lanka (10 wins in 13 ODIs) and Zimbabwe (4/4), tougher against West Indies (0/11 Tests). Post-1983, he led wins over England (2-0 Tests, 1986), the 1985 World Championship, and reached 1987 World Cup semis, though blamed for a collapse vs England. His aggressive style inspired belief, outshining his playing record under captaincy.

Career Achievements and Records Kapil played 131 Tests (5,248 runs, avg 31.05, 8 centuries, HS 163; 434 wickets, avg 29.64, best 9/83, 27 five-fors) and 225 ODIs (3,783 runs, avg 23.79, 1 century—175*—14 fifties; 253 wickets, avg 27.45, best 5/43). First to 400 Test wickets and 5,000 runs; world Test wicket record (434, held till 2000); first to 200 ODI wickets.

Awards include Arjuna (1980), Padma Shri (1982), Padma Bhushan (1991), Wisden Cricketer of the Year (1983), Wisden Indian of the Century (2002), ICC Hall of Fame (2010), CK Nayudu Lifetime (2013). He coached India (1999-2000, mixed results), faced cleared match-fixing allegations, and served as NCA chairman.

Post-retirement, he embraced golf, authored books, and appeared in films like 83 (2021).Enduring Legacy.

Kapil's 1983 heroics ignited cricket fever in India, mentoring stars like Tendulkar and transforming pace bowling norms. On his birthday, his all-round mastery—5,000+ runs, 687 wickets across formats—remains unmatched for an Indian. From Haryana fields to Lord's glory, Kapil Dev symbolizes resilience and joy in cricket.
