Govardhan Asrani, born on January 1, 1941, in Jaipur, India, is a distinguished Indian actor and director renowned for his extensive work in Hindi cinema. Over a career spanning more than five decades, he has appeared in over 350 films, leaving an indelible mark with his versatile performances, especially in comedic roles. 

Early Life and Education

Asrani hails from a middle-class Sindhi family in Jaipur, where his father owned a carpet shop. He completed his matriculation from St. Xavier's School and graduated from Rajasthan College in Jaipur. To support his education, he worked as a voice artist at All India Radio, Jaipur. His passion for acting led him to the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune, where he completed his course in 1966. 

Career Highlights

Asrani's film debut came with the Hindi film "Hare Kaanch Ki Choodiyan" in 1967. He gained prominence with roles in films like "Mere Apne" (1971) and "Bawarchi" (1972). His portrayal of the comical jailer in the iconic film "Sholay" (1975) remains one of his most memorable performances. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Asrani was a staple in Bollywood comedies, collaborating frequently with actors like Rajesh Khanna, appearing together in 25 films between 1972 and 1991. 

In addition to acting, Asrani ventured into direction, making his directorial debut with the Gujarati film "Amdavad No Rikshawalo" in 1974. He also directed and starred in the Hindi film "Chala Murari Hero Banne" (1977), which was critically acclaimed. 

Awards and Recognitions

Asrani's talent has been acknowledged with several awards. He won the Filmfare Award for Best Comedian for "Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar" in 1974 and "Balika Badhu" in 1977. Additionally, he received the Shama Sushama Award for Best Comedian for "Anhonee" in 1973 and was honored with the Best Actor and Best Director Award from the Gujarat State Government for the film "Saat Qaidi." 

Personal Life

Asrani married actress Manju Bansal in 1973, whom he met while working on films like "Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar" and "Namak Haram." The couple has a son named Naveen Asrani, who is a dentist based in Ahmedabad.
