Renowned folk singer Sharda Sinha, affectionately known as the "Bihar Kokila," passed away on November 5, 2024, at the age of 72. Known for her soulful renditions of traditional Bhojpuri, Maithili, and Magahi songs, Sinha was a celebrated cultural icon and a Padma Bhushan recipient, a distinction she earned for her significant contributions to Indian folk music. Her music, especially songs associated with festivals like Chhath Puja, played a vital role in popularizing regional music across India and beyond.
Sharda Sinha had been admitted to AIIMS in Delhi, where her health had been closely monitored by doctors. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was personally in touch with her medical team, had extended his support and expressed concern for her health. Despite the efforts of the medical staff, Sinha's condition remained critical, leading to her passing.
One of her final songs, "Dukhwa Mitayin Chhathi Maiya," was released shortly before her death in early November 2024. This song, like many of her works, captured the essence of traditional values and was particularly beloved during Chhath celebrations.
Sinha's legacy endures as a bridge between traditional folk music and contemporary Indian culture, with her songs continuing to resonate deeply within the hearts of her fans across generations.
